Amanita Muscaria & The Christmas Myth

The classic red-and-white "Mario mushroom" has a surprisingly deep and very old connection to the origins of Christmas symbolism.

• Shamans collected mushrooms, dried them on pine trees (ornaments), and entered snow-blocked homes via chimneys.

3. Reindeer Love Amanita Muscaria

• Reindeer seek out and eat these mushrooms, exhibiting intoxicated prancing.

4. Stockings by the Fire

• Mushrooms were dried in socks hung by the fire to reduce toxicity.
